Transformational. That word
that keeps coming to mind after attending Aaron Abeyta’s reading on Friday
night and his workshop this morning.
The reading was refreshing for Abeyta’s PERFORMANCE of his poetry:
he is a master of pacing and volume and tone, fitting them appropriately
to his varied subject matter and rhythms.
Varied indeed. He read from
a broad swath of his work, across genres and time. He made us laugh and cry and nod (in
agreement and astonishment, that is!)
The workshop was beautifully constructed and lead by Abeyta; his
students at Adams State should know how lucky they are to have his gentle and
sharp man guiding their work.
The quality of the work produced by participants at this morning’s
workshop (based on the samples several read) was a testament to the talented
writers in this area and Abeyta’s ability to call forth in such a short time
what is rich within us.
And he gave each reader a gift: a nugget of advice as they move
into what he calls his favorite part of writing: revision.
His ability to identify these gems in works he had heard only once, was
remarkable.
His work was resonant in his own voice, but it is also lives on
the page, so please invite his books into your home: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=aaron+abeyta+
We owe deep thanks to the organizers of this event and all the other
Poetry Month events in Loveland: Lorrie
Wolfe, Lynn Kincanon, Veronica Patterson and so many others who contributed their
time, money and effort.
