So many poetry events are taking place this coming Thursday that
I had to wonder if the moon would be full as well. Close, but as it happens, the moon is full
two days earlier. Nonetheless, three
interesting poetry events ARE happening the evening of Nov. 10: an installment of the CSU Reading Series, a
reading at Wolverine Farm by military veterans, and a gathering in honor of the
life and art of Jim Disney. All promise
to be wonderful, but here I want to focus on the later reading, taking place at
the Loveland Museum.
Long-time Coloradoan James Disney (1939-2021) was a visual
artist, active participant in community governance and, at the core of it all, an
outdoorsman: he summited Longs Peak 93 times, all of the park's 128 named
peaks at least once and 1,000 summits during his climbing career. His major body of artistic work focused upon
the mountains and landscapes of the Western United States, paintings he
referred to as “portraits of old friends.” Many of these, and some of his
various explorations of other artistic forms, are on exhibit at the Loveland
Museum.
This Thursday, beginning at 7:00 p.m., local poets will
share the poems they have written in response to some of the pieces in the show. Also to be shared during the evening are
poems that Disney found inspiring as he hiked in the Colorado mountains.
It will be an auditory, visual and intellectual treat. Hope to see you there!
