Eight Minutes of Light: The Energy of Numbers in Poetry
Numbers, counting, and measurements have ways of engaging us
and pulling us into a poem, says Veronica Patterson. Think of Wallace Stevens’
ways of looking at a blackbird, Aaron
Abeyta’s derivative about a tortilla, Walt Whitman’s “sextillions,” Jane Kenyon’s “Three Small Oranges, the measuring
in Yehudi Amichai’s “The Diameter of the Bomb,” Jane Hirshfield’s “The Heart’s
Counting Knows Only One.” This Sunday, Patterson will lead a workshop about
numbers in poetry—from 2:00 to 4:00 at Artworks in Loveland.
