Wow! Dorothy Allison’s appearance last Thursday was more like a performance than a reading: Very powerful! A couple observations I heard her make about writing: love language and use real lives as the nuggets from which you grow you own stories (my words, not hers).
This week, three events of note.
If the second presidential campaign debate is just too scary for you, come here about Poe-try—that is the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe: Harmony Library, 7 p.m.
Kristen Iverson, Director of the MFA program at the University of Memphis will be reading from her memoir, Full Body Burden, at Old Firehouse Books in downtown Fort Collins, 7 p.m. this Friday, October 19. In the book Iverson recounts growing up in the shadow of Rocky Flats. A colleague of mine in the English Department says that “it reads at times like a novel, at times like a thriller, at times like a memoir, at times like a history. I can't recommend it highly enough.”
And of course on Sunday in Loveland, Alexander McCall Smith will be reading and speaking in conjunction with Loveland Loves to Read. For complete details, see Beth’s Picks at right.
